Devlog 2: Basic Level Blocking


Goal

The main goal for me this week was creating the first scene (the house), as well as to start on the second scene (outside)

World Building

I have been using Aseprite to create my sprites this past week. I have finished the inner house tile map, allowing me to create the first scenes basic layout. I will be continuing to use Aseprite to create the decor for the house, as well as potentially the player and fireball this weekend. The outside world is planned to be a linear area. Once you leave the house, you can explore a bit, fight slimes, meet some NPCs, before eventually continuing down the path to the forest where you will meet stronger foes.

As apart of world building, I have added a camera boundary so when the player gets close to the end of the map, the camera doesn't continue.

Mechanics

I have used the PlayerShooting script from prac 8-15 as a base to create what will eventually be my "fireball" spell. Changes I plan on making include a limit to how fast you can cast as well as limited mana that recharges over time. My goal this weekend is to possibly have this fleshed out as well.

The image below is showing the sprites and boundary that were made and discussed in World Building, as well as showing the "fireball" spell in its current form.

Testing & Feedback

The game still isn't in a state for mechanics to be tested, but I have received feedback on my sprites I have created so far from friends. They've been assisting me with colour due to my unfortunate inability to see colour properly (deuteranopia). I do plan on asking for feedback from classmates this weekend when I have more sprites fleshed out.

Challenges

The main challenge I have had this weekend is around my colourblindess (deuteranopia). As this week was focused around the creation of sprites, I spent a lot of time struggling with art. Now, while I could grab a free tilemap or two, my goal is to have at least half the art in the game be something that I created. Especially for the environment. 

Next Week

Next weeks plan is to focus on the start of the outside world and the creation of the first enemies and NPCs, as well as polishing some mechanics. Potentially also starting on some of the menus/UI, depending on time.
